Devotion
True devotion is not a mere ritual or an external show of religion; it is a gentle, wholehearted turning of the soul toward God. It is a commitment rooted in love, where every thought and action flows from a desire to be near the Creator. In the quiet spaces of our lives, devotion manifests as a "thirst" for the Divine, a steady loyalty that seeks God’s presence even in dry and weary lands.
This path of devotion involves a surrender of the heart, where we move past the noise of the world to find a "simplicity that is in Christ." It is found in the way we speak, the way we serve others, and the way we maintain a steady rhythm of prayer and meditation.
Loving with Your Whole Being
Devotion begins with an undivided heart. It is the practice of bringing your mind, soul, and strength into alignment with God’s love.
"And you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength." (Deuteronomy 6:5)
The Thirst of the Soul
True devotion is a deep, personal yearning. It is the realization that our spirits find their only true rest in Him.
"O God, You are my God; earnestly I seek You. My soul thirsts for You; my body longs for You in a dry and weary land without water." (Psalm 63:1)
Devotion in Community and Prayer
Devotion is also lived out through our connection with others and our dedication to spiritual disciplines. It is a "steadfast" commitment to growth.
"They devoted themselves to the apostles' teaching and to the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer." (Acts 2:42)
Simplicity and Sincerity
The Bible warns us not to let our devotion become complicated or corrupted by the world, but to keep our focus purely on Christ.
"But I am afraid that... your minds might be corrupted from the simplicity that is in Christ." (2 Corinthians 11:3)
Devotion Through Service
We express our love for God by how we treat those around us. Every act of kindness is a quiet act of worship.
"Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers of Mine, you did for Me." (Matthew 25:40)
In essence, devotion is the art of staying "constantly attendant" to God—walking in truth, living with a good conscience, and finding joy in the simple, faithful act of being His.
