Surprise
In the quiet moments of the biblical narrative, surprise is often the gentle or powerful movement of God’s hand reaching into human history. It is the holy "suddenly"—the moment when our limited understanding meets the infinite possibilities of the Divine.

The Gentle Surprise of Fulfillment
Often, God’s surprises come as a fulfillment of promises we thought were long forgotten or physically impossible. For Abraham and Sarah, surprise sounded like laughter. After years of waiting, the news of a child in their old age was a miraculous disruption of their expectations, proving that God is never constrained by time or nature.

"Now the Lord attended to Sarah as He had said, and the Lord did for Sarah what He had promised. So Sarah conceived and bore a son to Abraham in his old age, at the very time God had promised him." (Genesis 21:1-2)

The Sacred Surprise of New Beginnings
God frequently surprises the humble with calls to greatness. The Annunciation to Mary represents a profound moment where the ordinary was touched by the extraordinary. Her surprise was met with the reassurance that God's grace provides the strength for whatever He asks us to do.

"So the angel told her, 'Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God. Behold, you will conceive and give birth to a son, and you are to give Him the name Jesus.'" (Luke 1:30-31)

The Triumphant Surprise of Life
The ultimate surprise in the Christian faith is the empty tomb. On a morning shadowed by grief, the followers of Jesus were met with an event that defied death itself. This divine surprise serves as the cornerstone of hope, reminding us that even in our darkest moments, God is working a victory we cannot yet see.

"The angel said to the women, 'Do not be afraid, for I know that you are looking for Jesus, who was crucified. He is not here; He has risen, just as He said.'" (Matthew 28:5-6)

The Transforming Surprise of Grace
Sometimes, God surprises us by changing the very direction of our lives. Saul, a man set on a path of destruction, was met with a blinding light and a voice of love on the road to Damascus. This encounter shows that no one is beyond the reach of a surprising transformation through God’s mercy.

"As Saul drew near to Damascus on his journey, suddenly a light from heaven flashed around him... 'Who are You, Lord?' Saul asked. 'I am Jesus, whom you are persecuting,' He replied." (Acts 9:3-5)

Living in the "Holy Unexpected"
The biblical view of surprise encourages us to live with a posture of openness. While human life can be unpredictable, these scriptural "surprises" teach us that we can rest in the knowledge that God’s plans are always for our good. We are encouraged to remain watchful and ready, not with fear, but with a sense of wonder.

"But you, brethren, are not in darkness, that daylight should surprise you like a thief." (1 Thessalonians 5:4)
