Fright
In the quiet moments of the soul, fright can feel like a sudden storm—a sharp, violent alarm that momentarily shakes our peace. Yet, throughout the scriptures, we are reminded that while fright is a natural human response to a fallen world, it is never the end of the story.
Biblical fright often stems from a sense of vulnerability or the weight of our own failings, much like Adam hiding in the garden or the Israelites trembling at the edge of the Red Sea. However, the Bible offers a gentle remedy for every startled heart: the presence of a Sovereign God who stands between us and our fears.
The Antidote of Trust
When the world feels overwhelming, the first step toward peace is shifting our gaze from the "sudden alarm" to the eternal God. Trust is not the absence of feeling afraid, but the decision to lean into God’s strength when we do.
"When I am afraid, I put my trust in you. In God, whose word I praise—in God I trust; I will not be afraid. What can man do to me?" (Psalm 56:3-4)
The Promise of Presence
Fright often makes us feel isolated, as if we are facing the shadows alone. God’s most frequent whisper to His people is "I am with you." This divine companionship acts as a shield, calming the nerves and steadying the spirit.
"Do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand." (Isaiah 41:10)
The Power of Perfect Love
Ultimately, the Bible teaches that fear and fright are displaced by love. As we grow in our understanding of how deeply we are loved by our Creator, the "terrors" of life lose their grip. His love is a safe harbor where fright cannot find a foothold.
"There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear, because fear has to do with punishment. The one who fears is not made perfect in love." (1 John 4:18)
The Stillness After the Storm
Just as Jesus spoke "Peace, be still" to the crashing waves that terrified His disciples, He offers that same stillness to you today. In every moment of sudden alarm, remember that the Lord is fighting for you; your only task is to remain still in His grace.
"The Lord will fight for you; you need only to be still." (Exodus 14:14)
